How to Repair a Broken Car Lock by Yourself

Before you start the DIY door lock repair, make sure you have all the necessary things you need. Basically, you will need the following:

  • Panel removal tool
  • Gloves
  • Socket wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver

1st Step - Remove the covers

You have to be extra cautious in doing so, as you might end up breaking any of the trim if you exert too much pressure. Once you successfully remove the covers, you can now access the lock and get on with the main job. Make sure to remove the plastic cover located around the lock with the help of your panel removal tool.

2nd Step - Remove the lock

After removing the covers, the next step lies in removing the lock from the electrical system. This is possible by removing the small plastic connection device. Disconnect the door fittings by removing the screws that hold it in place. Don’t forget to keep the screws secured for reassembly later on. Make sure you keep this in mind as you will need the screws to get back all of them together.

3rd Step - Install the new lock

Once you have your replacement door locks ready, you can now proceed to a new door lock installation. To do so, remove any covering that was held by the screws to access the lock. On the left of your door latch, you can find a hole with three “rods” placed. One of them is located just over the latch, while the second one is located towards the left. The last one is located directly on the left side of the latch. These are basically the “rods” that hold the lock in place. You have to remove them in order to change door lock.

Simply follow the above steps in reverse and make sure to put the rods properly back in place. This might look like a very complicated task, but if you do it right it’s actually really simple. However, if you find it hard to do DIY door lock installation, or simply don’t have the right tools for the job, you can always ask for our help at Nationwide Locksmith.
